Internship Opportunities

KEEN Chicago Camp KEEN Programs Intern

KEEN Chicago is a local affiliate of a national, nonprofit organization that empowers youth with disabilities through participation in physical activity and recreational athletics.  By providing free, non-competitive, one-to-one fitness and exercise programs, KEEN Chicago fosters confidence, self-esteem and community inclusion for children and adolescents with developmental and physical disabilities and provides respite and a supportive network for families and caregivers. We currently offer year-round, one-to-one, volunteer-lead recreational sports and swim programs for youth with disabilities age 5-21 in the Chicagoland area.

An internship with KEEN Chicago is ideal for students or individuals with a desire to develop skills in the areas of non-profit management, volunteer recruitment and community engagement and outreach within the disability community.  This is a part-time, partially remote and unpaid position (approximately 5-10 hours per week) with both weekend and weekday hours.

Intern will be engaged some in the following activities based on their skills, strengths, and interests:

  • Planning and executing 3-4 outdoor field trips with our KEEN Chicago Athletes from June-August.
  • Planning and preparing for our Camp KEEN Summer Programs in the areas of visual arts, music, theater, yoga, sports, and swimming.
  • Developing program supply lists and sourcing supplies for purchase.
  • Facilitating in-person Camp KEEN Programs during the weekends in July and August.
  • Drafting Newsletters.
  • Volunteer recruitment for sessions.
  • Communications with KEEN Families and Volunteers.
  • Maintain attendance for athletes and coaches during sessions.
  • Creation of programs related social media posts.

Ideally, the Camp KEEN Programs Intern would start during the month of April to gain familiarity with KEEN Chicago and begin planning for our special summer programs. Our first Camp KEEN field trip will take place during the month of June and Camp KEEN itself will meet on the weekends in July in August. Programming typically takes place in-person near UIC and within the Rogers Park neighborhoods of Chicago.
